The Chiefs' New Identity: A Running Game and an Aging Quarterback

The conversation kicks off with a critical look at the Kansas City Chiefs' recent game and their apparent shift in offensive strategy. Dan Le Batard highlights that the Chiefs, despite having Patrick Mahomes, are now emphasizing a strong running game, a move he sees as a deliberate effort to protect their aging quarterback. He points out that this approach allows Mahomes, who is still excellent but less mobile than he once was, to age gracefully in the league. "That's exactly how a good organization with a good coach allow their injured quarterback who is aging and not as mobile as he used to be but still excellent," Le Batard states, "That's how you allow a great quarterback to age with grace. You get him a running game in the offseason and you just protect him."

This strategy is particularly interesting given the prevailing NFL wisdom that running backs are disposable. Yet, the Chiefs went out and acquired Kenneth Walker, a move that Le Batard interprets as a clear signal of their intent to build around Mahomes in a different way. He notes that Walker, at 25, is in his prime, suggesting a long-term commitment to this new offensive philosophy. "They didn't get an aging Kenneth Walker hoping to eke one or two more years out of him. They got a 25-year-old running back. Even for that position, that's young, that's coming into his prime," Greg Cote adds, emphasizing the youth and potential of Walker.
