In a powerful and inspiring conversation, Gemma Inggal shared her remarkable journey of recovery and resilience after suffering a stroke at just 40 years old. Her story, filled with determination, purpose, and an unwavering spirit, offers profound insights into overcoming life's biggest obstacles and finding a new sense of self.

The Day Life Changed: A Stroke on Horseback

Gemma's life took an unexpected turn on an ordinary Saturday morning. She had just finished her usual boxing class and was enjoying a horseback riding lesson when she experienced a sudden wave of pins and needles down her left side. Initially, she dismissed it as overexertion, thinking she had simply overdone it at boxing. "I thought I'd just kind of overdid it because I felt dizzy to the extent that I needed to sit down," Gemma recalled. The dizziness passed, but a dull headache remained, which she again attributed to a minor ailment. The next day, the headache persisted, but Gemma, ever resilient, took some paracetamol and proceeded with her afternoon horseback riding lesson.

It was during this lesson, trotting around the school, that the full force of the stroke hit. "All of a sudden, just felt this sudden wave of pins and needles all down my left side," she described. Despite the alarming symptoms, the thought of a stroke didn't immediately cross her mind. "It never really occurred to me that it could be a stroke because it's not the kind of thing you think about, is it?" she mused. Her riding instructor, however, recognized the gravity of the situation and insisted she go to the hospital. By this point, Gemma's left side had gone, and she needed help to get off the horse. The ambulance was going to take two hours, so her instructor drove her to the hospital, a decision Gemma remains incredibly thankful for. Upon arrival, she couldn't even lift her left leg or arm. She was disoriented, unable to recognize her husband until he spoke her name, a moment that brought her to tears as the reality of her situation began to sink in.
