The digest
Patrick O'Shaughnessy welcomes Eric Vishria, a general partner at Benchmark Capital, for a deep dive into the evolving landscape of software and hardware investing. Vishria, with a decade of experience, shares his insights on the shifting competitive frontier, the rise of AI, and the future of compute, offering a unique perspective on the traits of successful companies and investors in this rapidly changing technological era.
The Shifting Competitive Frontier: From Cloud to AI
Vishria highlights a profound shift in the competitive frontier, drawing parallels between the early days of AWS and the current AI revolution. He recalls the initial skepticism surrounding AWS in 2006-2007, where even the smartest investors failed to foresee its massive potential. The prevailing narrative was that AWS would commoditize everything, leaving no room for enterprise opportunities. However, the reality was quite different. Companies like Snowflake, Confluent, Elastic, Mongo, and Databricks emerged as direct competitors to AWS's offerings, running on AWS itself. This demonstrated that the market was far larger than initially perceived, allowing for multiple winners and specialized players to thrive.
Vishria sees a similar dynamic unfolding in the AI space. He challenges the notion that a single dominant player will "eat it all," arguing that the market is too vast for any one vendor to consume entirely. Instead, he anticipates an "oligopoly of winners" with numerous smaller, yet incredibly successful, companies emerging. The key takeaway from the cloud era, according to Vishria, is that the market was so big that no single vendor could scale and consume it all. This lesson is directly applicable to AI, where the sheer size and complexity of the market will necessitate a diverse ecosystem of specialized solutions.
