The digest
Eileen Gu, the Olympic gold medalist and freestyle skier, joined Jay Shetty on his podcast "On Purpose" to discuss her remarkable journey, balancing an elite athletic career with academic pursuits, and the profound influence of her family. Gu, who graduated early from high school and deferred her enrollment at Stanford to compete in the Olympics, shared insights into her unique approach to life, emphasizing the importance of direction over sheer hard work.
Beyond the Resume: A Life of Intellectual Curiosity
Jay Shetty kicked off the conversation by acknowledging Gu's impressive resume, which includes graduating from one of the best schools in the world and being a highly regarded athlete. He then asked what she wished people knew about her that couldn't be read on her resume. Gu revealed that for a long time, she felt the need to justify her academics as independent from sports. In the sporting community, she was known as "the biggest nerd," always helping others with homework. However, as she gained more recognition, she noticed a societal presumption that athletes don't truly engage with their education.
"Undercutting that was harder for me and at the same time really important, just because at my core, I think of myself more as an intellectual person who chose to do sports and to apply that kind of cerebral take in like an athletic context," Gu explained. She highlighted the distinction between an intellectual person who chose sports and an athlete who thinks they are smart, emphasizing that she falls into the former category. Her early graduation from high school at 16, before the Olympics, allowed her to dedicate two full years to being a professional athlete, a period she describes as her first time being "pro."
