The digest
In this episode, Heather emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries, communicating effectively, and embracing new beginnings. She shares personal anecdotes and introduces a powerful Hawaiian practice for forgiveness and well-being.
Respect Yourself and Set Boundaries
Heather begins by highlighting the crucial role of self-respect in how others treat us. She recounts a time when she would accept anything given to her, believing it showed her capability, but in reality, it was a lack of self-respect. She urges listeners to hold themselves accountable for creating boundaries and to recognize that these conversations don't have to be difficult. Instead, they should be direct, clearly communicating one's wants and needs. "Don't apologize for it, own it, rock it, give examples of how you want to be spoken to, and move forward with what you deserve: respect," Heather advises. She stresses that respect is a two-way street, regardless of age, social status, or professional seniority. If someone is being disrespectful, it's essential to raise a red flag and communicate that their behavior is unacceptable. She suggests asking direct questions like, "Have I done something to upset you?" or "Why is that?" to understand the other person's perspective and to give them an opportunity to explain or apologize. If they are still unable to treat you with respect, it might be time to re-evaluate the relationship.
