The digest

Clayton Morris, a seasoned observer of technological and societal shifts, joins to shed light on a critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution: its profound and often detrimental impact on the physical world and local communities. While much of the public discourse focuses on the abstract capabilities of AI and the potential for machines to become "masters," Morris argues that a more immediate and tangible concern lies in the massive infrastructure required to power this new era—specifically, data centers.

The Unseen Footprint of AI: Data Centers and Their Environmental Toll

Morris emphasizes that the current narrative surrounding AI is often skewed by a "badly informed tech perspective," which tends to overlook the physical demands of AI on our planet. He asserts that we are not at the beginning of this transformation, but rather at the precipice of a major societal shift driven by the rapid expansion of AI and data centers. This build-out, he warns, is happening at an unprecedented pace, with thousands of new data centers projected to be built across the United States in the coming years, effectively doubling the current capacity. These aren't just small facilities; they are becoming increasingly massive, exemplified by projects like "Stargate" in Abilene, Texas.

The environmental implications are staggering. Morris highlights that the vast majority of existing data centers rely on evaporative cooling systems, consuming hundreds of millions of gallons of water. To put this into perspective, a single data center can use as much water as 300 to 500 million gallons, dwarfing the consumption of an average American home. This massive water usage is already exacerbating water shortages across the United States, particularly in arid regions like the Desert Southwest, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Ranchers in these areas, already struggling to secure water for their livestock, are now finding themselves competing with tech giants who are granted special permits to tap into already strained aquifers.
