In a recent episode of the #BecauseMiami podcast, host Billy Corben sat down with attorneys Ray Rosco and Angelo Martin to discuss the shocking details surrounding the death of Evelyn Valdez and the subsequent wrongful death lawsuit filed against the City of Miami and its police department. The conversation delved into the events of the shooting, the alleged pattern of excessive force by Miami police, and the city's long-standing issues with accountability.
The Tragic Night in Wynwood
The discussion began with a detailed account of the events that transpired on a late Friday night/early Saturday morning in Wynwood. As bars were closing at 3:00 AM, Miami police turned a crowded street into what Corben described as a "Wild West-style shooting gallery." This incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including Evelyn Valdez, an innocent bystander who was celebrating her 28th birthday with friends and family. Ray Rosco revealed that the bullets that killed Valdez were fired by a Miami police officer, and all 10 to 11 rounds fired that night were from police officers. The target of the police, Norman Lindo, was involved in a scuffle inside a Wynwood bar and was holding a firearm at his side, seemingly trying to de-escalate the situation. Police intervened not verbally or physically, but with bullets. Shockingly, a verbal command to "show me your hands" was only issued after Lindo was already lying dead on the ground. Meanwhile, Evelyn Valdez was in the back of a car, stuck in traffic, bleeding to death, while City of Miami police and fire rescue personnel allegedly drove past her, letting her "lay there and die and bleed out."
