The digest
For nearly two decades, the way we consume podcasts has remained largely unchanged, relying on basic players that function more like repurposed music apps. However, Kevin Smith, CEO and founder of Snippet, is challenging this status quo with an advanced AI podcast app designed to unlock the true potential of spoken audio as a knowledge source. Snippet, which began as an idea five years ago, is leveraging breakthroughs in AI to create a more interactive, personalized, and productive listening experience.
The Genesis of Snippet: Solving a Personal Problem
The inspiration for Snippet stemmed from Smith's own frustrations as a podcast listener. In 2016, while commuting by bike to his first startup job in Zurich, he discovered the immense value of podcasts like Sam Altman's "How to Start a Startup." He was absorbing invaluable advice from industry giants like Peter Thiel and Paul Graham, insights that would otherwise be incredibly difficult to access. Yet, this wealth of knowledge came with a significant drawback: the inability to easily capture and revisit key moments. Stopping his bike to open a notes app, write down an insight, and then resume listening was disruptive and impractical, often extending his commute significantly. Furthermore, sharing specific moments with colleagues was a cumbersome process, usually involving sharing an entire two-hour episode and hoping they'd find the relevant part. This personal struggle highlighted a fundamental gap in existing podcast players: they were not built for knowledge retention or efficient sharing.
