The digest
Adam Foroughi, CEO of AppLovin, joined the All-In Podcast to share the remarkable story of his company's resilience, its unique position in the mobile gaming advertising ecosystem, and his perspective on the future of AI in advertising.
The Unseen Giant: AppLovin's Business Model
Adam Foroughi began by describing AppLovin as "probably the best founder no one's ever heard of." The company operates an ad platform discreetly embedded within hundreds of thousands of mobile games. Foroughi highlighted that AppLovin is quietly outperforming Facebook ads for e-commerce brands. He revealed that AppLovin, despite its low public profile, is a significant player. The company went public in April 2021 with a $28 billion market cap, which soared to $40 billion before experiencing a dramatic 92% drawdown to a $3.8 billion market cap in 2022. During this period, however, AppLovin generated $1 billion in EBITDA.
Foroughi explained that AppLovin helps mobile game developers monetize their games. The mobile gaming universe has exploded, with over a billion people daily playing casual mobile games. These aren't just kids; they're adults and heads of households. AppLovin disclosed in January 2022 that its platform alone handled $11 billion in annual ad spend. Since then, it has grown 60% year-over-year, reaching an estimated $20 billion today. Foroughi estimates the total mobile gaming advertising ecosystem is worth approximately $50 billion annually, a figure comparable to the entire social media advertising market not long ago.
