The Incident: A Truck Stop Encounter

The story begins with Sterling Barber's account of the night of November 27, 1995. Sterling, then 17 years old, stated he was at a truck stop after night school when he encountered Gerald Douglas Wyatt. According to Sterling, Wyatt, claiming to be a private detective, asked for help investigating his wife, who he suspected of cheating. Wyatt offered Sterling $40 to drive him around town. However, things quickly escalated after they left the truck stop. Sterling recounted that Wyatt pulled over on a dirt road, unzipped his pants, and then put his forearm on Sterling's throat, attempting to choke him. In a desperate act of self-defense, Sterling grabbed his hunting knife and stabbed Wyatt once in the shoulder, and then five more times in the groin when Wyatt allegedly tried to rape him.
