The digest

Bill Simmons is joined by Rob Mahoney, Anthony Dabbundo, and Billy Gil to delve into the Clippers' future, an NFL mini-mailbag, and the most compelling MLB narratives of the season.

The Clippers: A Rebrand on the Horizon?

The conversation kicks off with Bill Simmons pondering a radical solution for the Los Angeles Clippers: a rebrand. "Should they just change their name? Is this it?" Simmons asks (04:11). Rob Mahoney acknowledges the team's tumultuous history, marked by scandals and consistent underperformance, suggesting that a rebrand might be the only way to reset. "There's no history to protect. And whatever history they had, they just spat in Chris Paul's face to give Bradley Beal his number," Mahoney quips (05:39).

Simmons and Mahoney debate the effectiveness of rebrands in the NBA, noting that past attempts like the Brooklyn Nets or New Orleans Pelicans haven't necessarily translated into sustained success. However, the Clippers' unique situation, with ownership scandals and a lack of historical achievement, makes it a compelling case. Mahoney emphasizes the importance of their draft pick, Keyon George, as the sole beacon of hope. "He's the one thing they're holding on to like, 'well, if he's good and, you know, we'll have cap space and we got some of these Toronto picks,' but if he's not good coming out of the gate, now you're just, this is as bleak as it gets," Mahoney states (12:15).
