Theo Von welcomes Laura Delano, a prominent voice in mental health advocacy, to a candid and deeply personal discussion about psychiatric medication, its impact, and the often-overlooked journey of withdrawal. Delano, author of Unshrinking: A Story of Psychiatric Treatment Resistance and founder of the Inner Compass Initiative, shares her lifelong struggle with mental health diagnoses and the medical system, offering a powerful perspective on a topic that affects millions.
A Childhood Defined by Diagnosis
Laura Delano's story begins in a seemingly idyllic childhood in an affluent Connecticut town. Excelling in academics and sports, she appeared to have it all together. However, at the tender age of 13, a profound existential crisis struck. Looking in the mirror, she felt a sudden disconnect, questioning, "Who is she?" This experience, which Delano now recognizes as a potential 'ego death' or spiritual awakening, was misinterpreted within her environment. Lacking a framework for such a profound internal shift, she concluded, "I don't have a real self." This led to a period of intense emotional distress, culminating in acting out at home and eventually seeking professional help.
At 14, a psychiatrist diagnosed her with bipolar disorder after a single one-hour session, prescribing Depakote and Prozac. Delano highlights the subjective nature of psychiatric diagnoses, which rely on observation rather than biological tests, and the alarming speed at which such life-altering labels are given. "To tell a 14-year-old girl who you just met an hour ago, 'You have a lifelong, incurable disease in your brain,'" Delano recounts, emphasizing the profound impact of such a pronouncement on a developing identity. Initially, she rejected the diagnosis, intuitively feeling it was wrong. However, as her struggles intensified, the promise of a solution became irresistible.
