In a fascinating discussion, Dr. Ed Barnhart, an archaeologist and explorer, shared insights into his groundbreaking work on ancient civilizations in the Americas. From the Maya to the Inca, Barnhart's research challenges conventional understanding and opens doors to new possibilities, including the potential for undiscovered cities hidden beneath the Amazon rainforest.
The Maya: More Than Just a Calendar
Dr. Barnhart's journey into the ancient world began with a childhood fascination for exploration. "I was always an explorer," he recounted. "Even as a little kid, my parents had to lock the front door because I would just open it and walk out and keep walking." This innate curiosity eventually led him to archaeology, a path solidified by the movie Indiana Jones. While he never got to fight Nazis, the archaeology part certainly came true.
His initial focus was on the Inca, but a lack of professors in that field at the University of Texas led him to the Maya. This serendipitous shift proved fruitful. In 1995, during a field school in Honduras, Barnhart discovered the Maya city of Ma'ashna. This discovery, made when he was just 25, challenged the prevailing belief that all major Maya cities had already been found. He used topography maps and an understanding of Maya settlement patterns to predict where a city might be located, ultimately proving the skeptics wrong.
