The Joe Rogan Experience · Podcast summary
#2554 - Carlo Rovelli
Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli discusses the nature of reality, quantum mechanics, the perception of time, and the future of AI and humanity.
Listen on the show ↗Key takeaways
- 🌐Reality is not an objective, fixed entity but rather a network of interactions and perspectives, where an object's properties are defined by its relationships with everything else.01:15
- 🌍Embracing curiosity, questioning certainties, and fostering international cooperation are essential for humanity to navigate complex global challenges and build a more peaceful future.01:50
- ⏳Time is not universal but relative; its passage is affected by gravity, meaning time moves slower near massive objects, a concept validated by Einstein's theory of relativity.03:04
- 👁️Our human senses, while useful for survival, provide a limited and subjective perception of the world, and science serves as a crucial tool to correct these inherent biases.04:37
- 🤖The militarization of AI poses a significant threat to humanity, potentially leading to global conflicts if nations prioritize power and dominance over collaborative solutions.05:55
- 🧠Consciousness can be understood as an emergent property of complex interactions, akin to what was historically referred to as the 'soul,' and AI systems may also develop similar attributes through their interactions.09:45

The digest
In a fascinating discussion on the Joe Rogan Experience, theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli delved into the profound implications of quantum mechanics, challenging our conventional understanding of reality, time, and consciousness. Rovelli, known for his work in quantum gravity, presented a compelling argument that the universe is far more interconnected and subjective than traditional physics has led us to believe.
The Network of Interactions: Beyond Isolated Existence
Rovelli began by addressing Joe Rogan's intuitive feeling that "things don't exist in isolation, and that everything is somehow connected." (01:15) This intuition, Rovelli explained, aligns with the latest understandings in physics, particularly quantum mechanics. He posited that our everyday experience of reality is inherently relational. "We interact with persons, and persons are the way they interact with us and them, their relations and stuff. We always see things from our own perspective." (01:56)
Traditional science, especially classical physics, aimed to describe an objective, fixed reality existing independently of observers. Rovelli noted, "Science, physics in particular, seemed to be telling us, 'okay, no, no, yes, there is all this perspective, but there is an objective, fixed reality down there. We can look at it from the outside; it's made by little things, each one with its own properties.'" (02:07) However, quantum mechanics has fundamentally challenged this view. "This idea of an objective reality doesn't work much," Rovelli stated. (02:35) Instead, quantum mechanics suggests that reality is an "ensemble of perspectives," where the properties of an object are not inherent but rather how it interacts with everything else. (03:31)
This perspective shift implies that what we perceive as reality is a network of interactions, not a collection of isolated entities. "We should understand reality as this network of interaction, how things look to everything else." (03:51) This leads to a "more beautiful picture of reality than just, you know, we being outside and looking from the outside. We're inside reality, we're part of reality." (04:00)
