Qunut Witr vs. Qunut Nazila

Dr. Israr Ahmed clarifies the distinctions between Qunut Witr and Qunut Nazila. Qunut Witr is typically recited during the three rak'ahs of Witr prayer after the Isha prayer. The Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) practice, as narrated by Aisha (RA) in Bukhari and Muslim, involved 11 rak'ahs for the night prayer (Qiyam-ul-Layl), whether in Ramadan or not. This usually consisted of four rak'ahs, then another four, followed by three Witr rak'ahs. The four-rak'ah segments were often performed as two sets of two rak'ahs, with a rest in between. The Witr prayer itself is an odd number, and the term "Witr" in Arabic means "odd." The prayer can be performed as 2+1, or even 5, 7, or 9 rak'ahs with a single salam, as evidenced in Sahih Muslim. The common practice is 2+1. The specific dua for Qunut Witr, taught by the Prophet (PBUH) to Hassan ibn Ali, is "Allahumma ahdini fiman hadayt..." (O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided...). This dua is recited before bowing (ruku') in the standing position.

Qunut Nazila, on the other hand, is recited during times of calamity or oppression, specifically to invoke curses upon disbelievers. The Prophet (PBUH) recited Qunut Nazila for a month after his companions were treacherously killed. This dua is typically recited after bowing (ruku'). Imam Bukhari differentiated between these two types of Qunut, noting that the Prophet (PBUH) recited Qunut Nazila after ruku' for a limited period, while Qunut Witr was generally recited before ruku'. Therefore, if one intends to combine Qunut Witr with Qunut Nazila, it would be recited after ruku', as is the practice of Imams in Makkah during Ramadan. However, for regular Qunut Witr, the dua is recited before ruku' in the standing position, with or without raising hands, depending on the preferred method.
